A Linguistic Theory of Translation — J. C. Catford
This is not the kind of book you read simply to learn how to translate words from one language to another. Catford views translation from a slightly different perspective: for him, it is a complex system in which one language is constantly trying to "negotiate" with another.
The author examines why a translation sometimes turns out to be precise, while at other times—even when everything seems to have been translated correctly—the meaning still feels somehow different. He focuses on grammar, language structure, word meanings, and how all these elements shift during the translation process.
